Installing OS X Leopard on Lenovo S10 via USB Flash Drive
Posted by flibble in Tech, tags: Dvd Drive, S10, Usb DvdThis is part 1 in a 3 part series. Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtlivuKr9sY Part 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPoKYOD3jBA Welcome to my video on installing OS X Leopard on the Lenovo S10 netbook via a USB Flash Drive. Since the S10 has no built in optical drive, and not everyone has a USB DVD drive, a flash drive installation is a good alternative. Please watch the ENTIRE video before attempting ANYTHING! ALSO, you need access to OS X Disk Utility for this tutorial. That means …

So your saying it doesnt even start the install, correct? Powering up with the USB stick in just causes a reboot cycle? If so, the bootloader didnt install properly. You most likely need the older version of OSX86Tools to solve your problem. I’ll send you the link, as my comment wont post with a link here.
I may get to that, but it will probably be awhile honestly. There are a ton of different methods to accomplish that, and I have yet to try enough of them to determine which is the most friendly. So far, they seem to be more on the not friendly side
If you want to take a peek, google “vanilla retail os x install”. There are a ton of guides to look through.
okay i cant get this to work, i have done everything except the diiskpart because when i run it, diskpart refuses to see my usb .. i have the same u3 drive as you, but 8gb. i’ve deleted the software, and done everything but the usb when im done everything just makesmy s10 reboot… help??
is there anyway, you can show an install on a external DVD burner? with a leopard disc?
Thanks for the compliment. I have been working on a few other projects since doing this video, so my memory is a bit foggy, but I am recalling people having a problem using the non-journaled file system. Considering the huge drop in price for 4GB stick, I just picked one up solely to keep the OS X ISO on it as a quick boot/restore disk should I ever need it. So based on that, reduction in RW-ability was not a huge concern for me. I consider a ten dollar flash drive throw away technology anyway.
Wow; it’s a fantastic howto:) thx
Can it be installed on non journaled FS?
Flash has a limited number of writes, and a journaling file system will use up these writes considerably faster than a non-journaled filesystem, which will greatly reduce the lifespan of the key. For this same reason, it is best to forgo a swap partition.
Are you talking about when the install first starts and it checks the install disk? If so, simply click “skip” before it gets to that point. If thats not where its happening let me know where.
Help. Install Failed – could not validate “essentials package” Thoughts?
You’ll prob need to use a tool such as Gparted to resize your partitions if thats your plan. Also, there is a command to enter after the install so the bootloader will ask you which OS you want to start… Its in the comments below somewhere… I have been meaning to get to a dual boot video, but I have another video series that I am finishing up thats coming out soon before I can get to that unfortunately. There is some help in the comments though from others who have done the dual boot.
Thanks. Last question before moving forward. I’ll have 160G, So I’d like to keep XP, set up an additional partition for OSX. Other considerations when installing from USB?
Cool! Good Luck! Should be a piece of cake. Yes, I use Azalia in Part 2 of this video series (Link in the description). It does not get the mic working though. Nothing does at this point unfortunately.
S10 coming tomorrow. Can’t wait to get started. I’ve read where the AzaliaAudio.pkg is best for audio. Not sure if this gets the mic to work. Have you heard about anyone getting the mic to work?
Yeah, I have been meaning to finish up a dual boot video I have been working on… Too many projects at the moment
Soon. Other good videos coming soon as well
Thanks for the information and pointing me in the right direction. Perhaps that would be a good subject to do another video tutorial on the dual boot setup.
Thanks for the fast answer!
I think I won’t need Bluethoot anyway.
Yes, but if you have Bluetooth on your model, that interferes a little with sleep. Look through the comments if so. I think someone had a solution for that problem that they shared.
You can use a tool like Gparted. You can find a LIVE CD of Gparted free on the net. You dont have to mess with Bootcamp.
Will this work for a Lenovo IdeaPad S10e?
Thanks for the video. It works perfectly for me. Great instruction. How can I place a second partition back in so that I can do dual boot with XP? I wiped my drive clean before installing OSX so I don’t have the original partition any longer. Will Bootcamp work with this OSX hacked installation. I hesitate to try bootcamp fearing I might ruin the progress that I’ve made. Anyone has any experience with Bootcamp on this setup?
That was going to be my next suggestion, trying the older terminal based version. As far as checking the drive, if the EFI portion failed, you will simply get a blinking cursor upon booting from it. If the install starts you are good to go. Its just like a normal install also, it will check the integrity of the install disk before proceeding and then give you the normal pre-installation options just as if you were installing from the Leo DVD.
I used build 149, which leverages terminal for that EFI functionality. Is there a way to check this drive before attempting an install?
macbook pro intel, 10.5.6… I”ll use the ISO image from a dvd and go from there. Thanks.
Are you running Leopard? As far as I am aware, OSX86tools will only run on Leopard. I dont use Parallels, so I couldnt help you there without some testing. What kind of Mac are you using? Is it intel based? Or an older G4 etc.? I dont think a non intel based Mac can run the tools… Ill have to try it out on my old PowerBook.
OSX86tools not running on my Mac. Could it be that I’m also running parallels, with its own partition?
It will run on either an actual Mac, or a PC running OS X. It will not run under windows.
