This, rather large window, is the new Windows Live Messenger. Currently in public beta this is what Microsoft will shortly be forcing all current Windows Live users to upgrade to.
The focus is on social networking. If you are one of the many that have little or no interest in this social phenomenon may want to turn away and read a newspaper.
One of the most obvious features, if it could be referred to as such a thing, is the removal of
custom display names. In a bid to consolidate all Windows Live services into one single ID, and to help prevent abuse and spam on the messaging system, Microsoft now only permit you to use your real name. No longer will you be know as DaddyLongLegs69 or IvorBiggun. Instead you will become plain old boring John Smith (although if your name is John Smith, please accept my apologies. And condolences). Of course you could simply change your real name in Windows Live to something else such as Mr Kipling but sadly any name you decide upon must have a first name and a surname. And Microsoft reserve the rights to remove any names they consider to be abusive or false. So no calling yourself Big Penis.
Fans of large windows will rejoice at the new Windows Live Messenger. It’s large window offers a portal into the online world of Bing and other parts of the MSN family. However if, like me, you miss the good old days where Messenger didn’t take up the entire screen then you will be pleased to know that with one simple button click, messenger will
transform into a pale imitation of it’s previous self.
Microsoft show no signs of backing down on many of the decisions they have made to Messenger. Will some users be happy with the changes or will people be up in arms and battering down the doors at Redmond demanding they reactivate the custom names they have become to love. Or simply will the masses move to an alternative instant messaging platform such as Google Talk? I suspect we won’t have long to wait.

On Tuesday, May 5 (PST), the RC will be available to everyone via our Customer Preview Program. As with the Beta, the Windows 7 RC Customer Preview Program is a broad public program that offers the RC free to anyone who wants to download it. It will be available at least through June 30, 2009, with no limits on the number of downloads or product keys available.

|
So you don’t need rush to make sure you get your copy. When you’re ready to download the RC, it’ll be waiting for you.
To get the RC please use one of the following links:
IMPORTANT: If you are running Windows 7 Beta you’ll need to back up your data (preferably on an external device) and then do a clean install of the Windows 7 Release Candidate. After installing Windows 7, you will need to reinstall applications and restore your files. If you need help with the installation process, please see the Installation Instructions.
If you’re running Windows Vista, you can install Window 7 RC without having to back up and reinstall your programs and data. But to be on the safe side, please do backup your data before you start.
Please note: All users of the Windows 7 Release Candidate (including Windows Vista users who have upgraded to the Release Candidate) must do a clean installation of Windows 7 RTM. Please keep this is mind as you consider downloading the Release Candidate as opposed to waiting for the general availability release.
Thanks again for your help in reaching this important milestone. We hope that you will join us in testing the RC and finishing Windows 7!

Microsoft have teamed up with ad agency Crispin, Porter & Bogusky to help it launch a line of graphic tees brilliantly dubbed “Softwear by Microsoft”.
Several of the shirt designs were handled by long-time respected artist Common. Microsoft says of the campaign: “[Softwear is] a clothing line that taps the nostalgia of when PCs were just starting to change our lives.” This latest addition to the “I’m a PC” campaign will find its way to US stores on December 15th. No word if there will be a European launch.

Word is that a Windows 7 beta could be out and about as early as next month, according to a message on the official MSDN Developer Conference website which states “all attendees will receive a Windows 7 Beta 1 DVD.” As the events will run from December to January, and “attendees at events schedules for December will have DVDs mailed out to them when they become available” it’s pretty safe to expect this to be released next month.
